Metal Creep Deformation

As mentioned, metal creep is a type of deformation that metals can experience. Such deformation can be caused by a wide range of factors, one of the most common being excessive stress below the metal’s yield level, and elevated levels of heat. You see, metal is chosen for particular applications based on the properties they offer. One of the most sought-after metal properties is yield strength, which refers to how well a metal can maintain its structural integrity and performance under stress.

The point at which a metal begins to bend or deform as a result of stress is when the metal has reached its yield strength capacity. However, there is an aggravating phenomenon that can cause metal to bend or deform before it reaches it’s yield strength limit. This is known as metal creeping. Metal creeping is something that should be prevented at all costs, as it can both devastate the metal structure, as well as, pose several hazards and dangerous conditions. It is vital to choose the right metal for your intended application to prevent the dangers of metal creeping. You can identify the signs of metal creep in 3 different stages.

Metal Creeping Stages:

Stage 1 – Primary Metal Creep. This is the first part of the metal deformation process in which elastic corrosion begins to develop. This type of deformation is not necessarily permanent, so long as it is corrected upon early discovery, but if it goes on without correction, permanent deformation will occur.

Stage 2 – Secondary Metal Creep. This phase of the metal creeping process begins once the stress rate has stabilized, and continues on consistently. Although this stage of the process often develops more slowly than the others, it is permanently damaging.

Stage 3 – Tertiary Metal Creep. This stage of the metal deformation process occurs when micro-structural damage finally happens. At this point, the stress rate is not only consistent, but also increasing more and more. Eventually, the metal structure will breakdown and experience full failure.

Overheating Metal

The primary consequence of overheating a metal is that its valuable mechanical properties become damaged, such as tensile strength. The process of overheating changes the microstructure of metal, but the type and extent of damage varies among materials. For instance, hardened steel loses strength, while precipitation-hardened materials can undergo metal aging. See our blog, “FAQS About Metal Aging” to learn more.

In addition to changes in its microstructure and mechanical properties, metal overheating can also make metal lose its appeal. Exterior aesthetics are greatly disrupted and damaged when metal undergoes overheating, which can be a negative factor for metal products that are intended for exposure, such as industrial piping. Through subsequent heat-treatment, most metals that have been damaged by overheating can be repaired or refurbished.

Metal Burning

Unlike metal overheating, in the case of metal burning, the consequences are more permanent. Metal burning takes place when a metal has been heated to such a high level that any resulting damages cannot be reversed or repaired. In most cases, metals that have been burned are tossed as scrap since they no longer retain the valuable mechanical and aesthetic properties it once did. You see, one of two degradation processes take place when metal is burned: intergranular oxidation and incipient melting. Both types of metal corrosion cause significant depletion of important properties.

The Value of Stainless Steel

Stainless steel, also known as inox steel or just inox, is an alloy that has a minimum of 10.5% chromium content and a maximum of 1.2% carbon content. Some of the most admired qualities of stainless steel is its resistance to staining, corrosion, and oxidation (rust). Now to Begin:

You can find all the tools and supplies you need to cut copper at any local home improvement or hardware store. Rather than using a pipe cutter, you may also choose to use a pipe slice or hacks. In this simple guide, we will be focusing on using a pipe. For instance, hacks has are not recommended for plumbing pipe projects, and pipe slice devices only allow you to cut one particular size. So, if you have various sizes to cut, you must purchase separate devices for each pipe diameter.

Cutting Copper Pipe

A pipe cutter allows for a hassle-free, exact, and easy pipe fitting experience. Then again, that’s what you should expect from a tool named precisely after the function it is intended to do. However, it is primarily recommended for pipes with larger diameters. For smaller diameters or thinner pipe walls, you will want to use a pipe slice.

How to Use a Pipe Cutter:

Step 1 – Position the pipe inside your pipe cutters. Then tighten the blade just right, being careful to not over-tighten. Over-tightening risks bending the pipe.

Step 2 – Using your hands, twisted pipe around 3 to 4 revolutions, and then remove it from the pipe cutters.

Step 3 – After removing the pipe, you should see a groove made by your revolutions. Slide the pipe back into the pipe cutters so that the groove aligns with the blade. Then secure it once again, but not too tight.

Step 4 – Begin twisting the pipe around several revolutions until it breaks free from the cutters.

Step 5 – Your pipe cutters should have a built-in burner removal tool. Use it to shave off any burrs or raised lips on the inside of your piping. If your pipe cutters do not have this tool, just use a round file instead.

Types of Press Brakes

A press brake is a long and narrow machine that bends sheet metal by first positioning it on top of a die, and then using a large amount of force, lowering a punching apparatus to bend it according to specifications. Most of the time, the sheet metal must be punched multiple times to bend it to the proper design.

There are several different types of methods used to lower the punch in a press brake, since metal bending requires various amounts of force depending on the type of metal and the order specifications. The most common methods of force application to lower the punch and bend sheet metal include pneumonic, hydraulic, electrical and mechanical.

Press Braking Tonnage and Speed

The force of a press brake machine is known as tonnage, which is measured in tons. For metal bending applications that require very high amounts of force, a hydraulic press brake is generally used. When less force is needed, a pneumonic or servo electrical press brake are the standard options. But just as force capabilities differ among the different kinds of press brakes, so does speed. Servo electric and pneumonic press brakes tend to deliver the highest level of accuracy at higher speeds, compared to mechanical or even hydraulic.

Common applications for press braking are car panels, aircraft frames, artwork and furniture, and industrial containers. When planning the metal bending process, the most important considerations that need to be made first include the type of metal, die, punch, and tonnage. Carbon steel is one of the most useful metal commodities we have in the world. Numerous industries rely on carbon steel because it is extremely affordable and retains terrific mechanical properties. The makeup of carbon steel is generally a combination of carbon, iron, and other trace elements. Measured in weight, carbon steel usually retains between 0.05% and 2% carbon. Which Grades of Carbon Steel Have Good Machinability?

When it comes to machining carbon steel, there are some grades that work well, and others that prove a bit challenging. For instance, grades with lower carbon content are easily machined, such as C1010 and C1018. Even grades with slightly high carbon content have decent machinability, like C1041 and C1044. On the other hand, grades like C1045 have a very high carbon content without any additional elements to assist in machining; so it is a poor selection for applications that involve machining.

Which Grades Can Be Welded?

Just like machinability, there are several types of CS that can be welded, and several others that are not great choices for welding applications. Grades that contain high machinability, like C1041 and C1044, are generally poor at welding. That is because they contain sulfur that will lead to weld solidification cracks. But if you choose a lower grade, like C1010 or A36, you will have no trouble with welding. If you use higher grades, like C1045, you will likely require preheat or post-weld heat treatments.

How Strong is Carbon Steel?

If the carbon content is low, the tensile strength is generally also low. If it is high, then the tensile strength should be high. If you project requires sufficient strength, a low-grade is not a good choice. Instead, choose a higher strength carbon steel, like C1045. If you need strength and formability, you can choose a high-strength low-alloy steel (HSLA) that contains low carbon, but designed to still retain high strength capacities.

Is it Resistant to Corrosion?

Carbon steel is a ferrous metal, which means it contains iron. Accordingly, when exposed to certain elements, like oxygen and water, the metals will oxidize and rust will form. And rust weakens the structural integrity of metal, which then leads to corrosion. If your metal application requires a resistance to corrosion, you are better off choosing a galvanized or plated carbon steel that contains chromium or some other corrosive-resistant agent. Also, painting carbon steel helps to prevent corrosion.
