The Benefits of Galvanized Metal

After metal is galvanized, the added layer of protection serves as a first defense against all external environmental factors, such as moisture, rain, snow, dirt, wind, wildlife, and any other element or organism that can negatively impact the appeal and structural integrity of the base metal. Galvanization also protects metal through a process known as “galvanic corrosion”, which takes place when two metals with separate electro-chemical make-up come into contact with one another while an electrolyte is present, such as the case of salt water. Furthermore, galvanizing metal is more cost-effective compared to using austenitic stainless steel or aluminum for corrosion prevention applications.

Methods of Galvanizing

There are many different methods used to galvanizing metal. The most common approaches include pre-galvanizing, hot-dip galvanizing, and electro-galvanizing. Pre-galvanizing and electro-galvanizing are generally applied continuously to a roll of sheet metal, while hot-dipped galvanizing is mostly applied to metals with complex shapes and formations. Here is a brief description of each process and how they give metal anti-corrosion properties:

Pre-Galvanizing

Pre-galvanizing is process that involves cleaning the base metal (either mechanically, chemically, or both) to ensure that a quality bond can be made between metal and coating, then passing it through a pool of liquid zinc, and then recoiling it. This method is typically carried out in a steel mill, and only applied to metals that are already shaped.

Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Hot-dip galvanizing is very similar to pre-galvanizing in that both process involve cleaning the base metal and then dipping it into a bath of hot, liquid zinc. However, prior to the hot dipping, the base metal is further cleared of any leftover oxides.

Electro-Galvanizing

Electro-galvanizing is a process that involves using electrical currents in an electrolyte solution to transfer zinc ions onto metal. To achieve this, positively-charged zinc ions are electrically reduced to zinc metal, which is in turn, deposited onto the positively-charged base metal. Grain refiners are also sometimes incorporated to ensure smoother coating.

What is Galvalume?

Galvalume is a specialized coating made from aluminum, zinc, and silicon. Used primarily on steel, or iron-based alloys, this coating is intended to protect metal from corrosion and oxidation.

What Does Galvalume Do?

Galvalume protects iron-based alloys from rust, tarnishing, and other structural defects by providing an additional layer against outside elements and conditions. Furthermore, the zinc within the coating oxidizes first, it protects the base metal from the damage that results from such corrosion. This also makes it similar to galvanization.

Which Metals Can Be Coated With Galvalume?

Galvalume is mostly applied to steel, carbon steel, and other iron-based alloys. However, possible applications may also include cast iron, ferritic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel, and low alloy steels. Ferritic stainless steel has large quantities of ferrite in its chemical composition. It contains grades like 409, 430 and 439. Martensitic steel is ferromagnetic, as it contains an abundant amount of iron in grades like 410, 420, and 440. Basically, the majority of materials that can be galvanized can also be treated with galvalume.

What are Recommended Applications for Galvalume?

The most common applications for galvalume coated metals include roofing and outdoor metal paneling work. It is also used in any application in which metal needs protection against snow, ice, rain, water, and other natural elements and conditions.

Are Galvalume and Galvanizing Different From One Another?

Galvanization and galvalume coatings are similar in many ways since they both involve applying a sacrificial metal coating to a base metal for means of protection. However, the primary difference between the two is their alloy makeup. Galvalume coating is comprised of aluminum, zinc, and silicon, while galvanized coatings are comprised of only zinc. This means that galvalume coatings are thicker and provide an enhanced level of protection for a base metal. Furthermore, many prefer to visual appeal of galvalume coatings compared to hot-dipped galvanized metals.

Material Removal

Material removal refers to the process of removing metal mass from sheet or plate, or really any form of metal, for the purpose of altering its properties, functions, or dimensions. The top three most popular material removal processes used in metal fabrication include notching, hole punching, and drilling.

➀ Notching

Metal notching is actually a metal shearing process. Hard, sharp tools are used to remove specific material from metal sheet or plate, but only on the outside boundaries. Notching is not the same as hole punching, although they are often confused for one another. Notching is frequently used in the metal fabrication industry in preparation for metal bending or other mechanical formation.

Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRA’s)

Corrosion resistant alloys are a type of metal that is specially designed and manufactured to resist deterioration, discoloration, degeneration, and other kinds of corrosion. There are many kinds of CRA’s to choose from, all of which ranging in level of resistance. Elements and condition like temperature, CO2, Sulphur, environmental pH, and chloride ion concentration all affect resistance capabilities. These factors in turn affect the passive film’s stability (commencement of overall corrosion or pitting), re-passivation ease of initiated pits, dissolution rates or metal from pits, and the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) risk.

Common CRA’s on the Market:

There are various kinds of Corrosion resistant alloys available on the market today, however, there are 3 in particular that seem to take the lead on current trend. These include 316L (austenitic stainless steel), alloy 22, and Zeron® 100.

316L (Austenitic Stainless Steel) – The most common applications for 316L CRA include clad line pipe building, surface piping, and vessel cladding. One downfall is that it will pit of exposed to oxygen.

Alloy 22 – Alloy 22 is a CRA that is used for conditions that require resistance to oxidizing acid chlorides, wet chlorine, mixtures containing nitric acid or oxidizing acids with chlorine ions, formic and acetic acids, ferric and cupric chlorides, brine, salt water, and even reducing acids like sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid.

ZERON® 100 – ZERON® 100 is highly resistant to both pitting and corrosion in the presence of salt water, stress corrosion cracking, and similar elemental conditions.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel, also known as inox steel or just inox, is an alloy that has a minimum of 10.5% chromium content and a maximum of 1.2% carbon content. Some of the most admired qualities of stainless steel is its resistance to staining, corrosion, and oxidation (rust). For this reason, it is often used in kitchens and food processing plants, as well as industries like medical, electrical, petrochemical, manufacturing, automotive, and more.

Stainless steel comes in many grades and finishes, all of which offer their own unique appeal or performance. Compared to carbon steel, stainless steel has a much higher chromium content, so when exposed to conditions that would otherwise make it rust or corrode, it instead forms a passive coating of chromium oxide that prevents further deterioration. Not only does it not corrode and does not require a protective coating, it is also easy to clean and sterilize.

Mild Steel

Mild steel is also known as carbon steel, and as mentioned, has a much less chromium content than stainless grades. In fact, the American Iron and Steel Institute officially delineates carbon steel as having no more than 2% carbon, and no other appreciable alloying element. Regardless of its low chromium content, mild steel makes up the majority of the steel production industry around the world because it has such a wide scope of applications.

Mild steel is strong, firm, and ferromagnetic, which means it also contains iron. Because of these properties, mild steel is widely used in manufacturing motors and electrical appliances. On the other hand, carbon steel is less resistant to corrosion, which means it requires a protective treatment of galvanizing or coatings if its application places it in a corrosive environment.

Comparing the Two

When it comes to the primary differences between stainless steel and mild steel, it all comes down to strength, ductility, hardness, aesthetics, and cost. Stainless steel contains additional alloying elements, including chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, all of which enhances the mechanical and chemical properties and makes it resistant to corrosion. Mild steel is less brittle, but can be strengthened more by adding carbon.

So How Do You Choose?

Your choice depends on the application of the metal. Mild steel is best applied to projects in which the metal will not be visible. If the metal will require fabrication, such as welding, bending or rolling, mils steel is better. And if you require a very large piece of metal, mild steel is more cost-effective. If the metal will be visible, whether painted or coated, stainless steel is the more visually appealing and sterile option.

Stamping
